Trudy Benson

Trudy Benson

American artist Trudy Benson's large-scale, invigorating abstractions revel in the possibilities of paint, from hard-edged geometries to fastidious linework, drips, smears and luscious gradient blends.

Use of various paint mediums in a single canvas - acrylic, flashe, enamel, spray paint and oil are typical - make for subtly different textures and finishes that complement the range and endeavour of her mark-making.

Benson has suggested that her miscellaneous approach to both material and gesture relates to "...my very first abstract paintings (which) were made as a child on an ancient black and white Mac with Microsoft Paint's built-in tools: the pencil, the paintbrush, the spray can, the fill bucket, and the gradient."

There's certainly a trace of this digital apprenticeship in the current appearance of her highly-layered, bustling canvases, although Benson's fondness for textural play - crusted paint and almost improbably chunky impasto - is a far cry from the flatness of on-screen imagery.
