about this artist
Born in Cuba in 1957, Felix Gonzalez-Torres grew up in
Puerto Rico before moving to New York City, where he held his first solo
exhibition in 1990.
Known for his quietly minimal yet profound installations and sculptures,
Gonzalez-Torres' work employs simple materials such as strings of lightbulbs,
clocks, stacks of paper, or wrapped candies. Many of these installations
invite the viewer to take a piece of the work with them.
Felix Gonzalez-Torres died in 1996 of AIDS-related complications.
