Gert and Uwe Tobias work in various media including ceramics, wooden constructions and watercolour paintings, but are best known for their large-scale woodcuts.
Born in Romania, the twin brothers collaborate on artworks which fuse figurative motifs with abstraction, while drawing on influences including Romanian folklore, popular culture and the powerful aesthetics of historical art movements such as constructivism and Dada.
With their allusions to modernist experimentation in both painting and printed media, the Tobias brothers' vivid, elaborately composed prints reflect the integral relationship of graphic design to early twentieth century practice and extend its lineage within today's art.
