Born in 1981, this young artist references a broad range of historical abstraction to produce highly varied, almost incongrous, works.
Of all the artists featured in this section, Hartley appears the most influenced by (although certainly not limited to) indigenous British painting, partially evoking the work of early 20th century artists such as Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell or Roger Fry, as well as postwar painting from the '40s and early '50s.
Hartley's synthesis of allusions and styles results in works which, while curiously familiar, are nevertheless mediated by his own investigation of the power of resurrected abstract forms and their relevance to contemporary painting.
