A 2005 graduate of the Royal College, Sam Windett's small, thickly worked paintings possess a gravitas that belies their modest size.
Windett's abstracted rendering of commonplace objects is unfussily direct, his frequent return to identical subjects a consistent exploration of specific formal concerns.
Yet Windett's work is far from humourless, the hint of bathos underlying his choice of subjects - a glass and drinking straw, a bicycle wheel (Windett's painting is rarely entirely abstract) - playfully at odds with the apparent solemnity of their execution.
