A hugely important figure in recent abstract art, German painter Tomma Abts currently lives and works in the UK.
A highly formal, cerebral painter, Abts always works within a strict format of acrylic and oil on small canvases measuring 48 x 38 cm. She uses no source material and begins to paint without any real notion of the final result.
Abts' work differs from the conventions of much abstraction by seeking to convey specific depth and form through shadow, highlight and the literal building up of layers of paint, an endeavour which lends her work an unusually graphic quality.
