New directions in US abstract art

Sarah Crowner

current American abstract art: Sarah Crowner

Sarah Crowner's beautifully poised abstract compositions seem, at first glance, to spring from a lineage of American hard edge abstraction.

What is particularly interesting about these works, however, is that instead of consisting of one, single canvas surface, Crowner's geometries are quite literally pieced together from sections of roughly textured linens, painted canvas or coloured cloth.

The variety of surface textures not only provides a visual and tactile counterpoint to the flatness of Crowner's abstract motifs, the act of sewing through which the pieces are joined also serves as a subtle interrogation of the male hierarchy associated with American post-painterly abstraction.

Coupled with the fact that Crowner is also a ceramicist, the element of craft surreptitiously embedded within the works locates them within an amalgam of traditions ranging from the folk art of patchwork to the holistic modernism of the Bauhaus.
