Rafael Lozano-Hemmer

Under Scan transforms architectural space via the intervention of both virtual and real participants.

Thousands of alternating video portraits taken in the city hosting the work are beamed onto the ground using automated projectors.

Yet the presence of strong white light diminishes the visibility of these projections, which can only be seen clearly in the shadows cast by spectators as they move within the illuminated space.

Lozano-Hemmer has also worked with a variation of this technique, Body Movies, in which the projections are beamed onto walls and revealed by the shadows of passers-by.
