Wu Xiaohai

Jorinde Voigt: new contemporary drawing

Chinese artist Wu Xiaohai (b. 1972) creates large drawings in charcoal with a wistful, valedictory aura.

Always containing a male and female figure - usually children - these lone protagonists play out intimate dramas against carefully evoked, dream-like backdrops.

At once autobiographical - "I guess the boy is the little Xiaohai" - and a universal paean to memory, childhood and the passage of time, Xiaohai's elegaic drawings reflect on "affection, emotion, friendship ... and the loss of our paradise."
