Robin Rhode: new contemporary drawing

Robin Rhode

For South African artist Robin Rhode, drawing provides a platform for physical interaction, a practice inspired by observation of similar activities during his schooldays.

Using basic drawing materials such as charcoal and chalk, Rhode's sketches become props in simple dramas such as playing a record, waving a flag or spinning a yo-yo (left).

In early works, the walls or concrete spaces of Johannesburg provided a location for Rhode's whimsical performances and their documentation as a sequence of flickbook-like photographs.

Now based in Berlin, the artist has expanded his practice to include video, animation and large-scale projects such as the massive, 2008 tyre-track drawing created using a BMW Z4 roadster equipped with paint-spraying nozzles (below).
